Name and Organization
The competition is named the Open International Geography Olympiad (openGeo).
It is organised by Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), Ministry of Education of Russian Federation, Primakov School, Moscow State University High School.

Objectives
The openGeo Olympiad aims to:
  • Promote interest in geography among secondary school students worldwide,
  • Develop geographical thinking, analytical, and practical skills among school students and future geographers,
  • Support international connections between young geographers.

Dates and Format
Dates: June 20−23, 2025.
Format: The openGeo is conducted entirely online and is free of charge.
The competition includes three rounds, held over two consecutive days (June 21−22):
  • Written Response Test (WRT),
  • Practical and Mapping Exercise (PME),
  • Multimedia Test (MMT).
The language of the Olympiad is English. All tasks, instructions, and official communication will be conducted in English. Participants must be able to work independently in English without assistance.

Participants
Each participating country may be represented by one team only.
A team may consist of up to six (6) student participants. The number of participants is selected by each country. Each of them must:
  • Be 14 years of age or older,
  • Be either currently enrolled in secondary school, or have completed their final year of school in the same year,
  • Have been selected through a national geography Olympiad selection procedure.
All participants compete individually.
All participants perform the same tasks.
Each national team must be represented by team leader(s). Team leaders are responsible for registration, communication with the organisers, and supervision of the participants.

Technical Requirements
All participants must:
  • Have access to a reliable internet connection,
  • Use a computer (laptop) with an operational camera and microphone,
  • Be located in a quiet and undisturbed environment during testing sessions.
During all rounds, participants are required to:
  • Keep their camera and microphone switched on (openGeo is subject to online proctoring),
  • Follow instructions issued by authorised proctors,
  • Refrain from any form of communication, collaboration, or academic dishonesty.

Awards
Final scores are calculated as a weighted combination of marks awarded for three types of competitive activities:
  • Written Response Test (WRT) — 40% of total marks,
  • Practical and Mapping Exercise (PME) — 40% of total marks,
  • Multimedia Test (MMT) — 20% of total marks.
Up to ½ of the participants are awarded medals and diplomas according to the results.
Gold, Silver and Bronze medals  are distributed according to an approximate ratio of 1:2:3.
The results of the Olympiad are undeniable.
Based on performance, participants may receive gold, silver or bronze medals.

Registration
Registration is carried out by team leaders on behalf of national teams.
