Name and OrganizationThe competition is named the Open International Geography Olympiad (openGeo).
It is organised by Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), Moscow State University High School and Ministry of Education of Russian Federation.
ObjectivesThe openGeo Olympiad aims to:
- Promote interest in geography among secondary school students worldwide;
- Develop geographical thinking, analytical, and practical skills among school students and future geographers;
- Support international connections between young geographers.
Dates and FormatDates: June 20−23, 2025.
The Olympiad takes place over four days:
- Opening Ceremony;
- Two competition days
- Closing Ceremony with the announcement of results.
The competition includes three rounds, held over two competition days:
- Written Response Test (WRT),
- Practical and Mapping Exercise (PME),
- Multimedia Test (MMT).
The Olympiad is conducted entirely online and is free of charge for national teams selected through a national geography Olympiad selection procedure.
The language of the Olympiad is English.
ParticipantsEach participating country may be represented by one team only up to six (6) student members. The number of participants is selected by each country. Each of the participats must:
- be between 14 and 19 years old;
- be either currently enrolled in secondary school, or have completed their final year of school in the same year.
All participants compete individually. They must be able to work in English independently without assistance.
All participants perform the same tasks.
Each national team must be represented by 1 or 2 adult team leaders. Team leaders are responsible for registration, communication with the organisers, and supervision of the participants.
Technical RequirementsAll participants must:
- Have access to a reliable internet connection;
- Use a computer (laptop) with an operational camera and microphone (tests can’t be taken using mobile device);
- Be located in a quiet and undisturbed environment during testing sessions.
During all test sessions, participants are required to:
- Keep their camera and microphone switched on (openGeo Olympiad is subject to online proctoring);
- Follow instructions issued by authorised proctors;
- Refrain from any form of communication, collaboration, or academic dishonesty.
AwardsFinal scores are calculated as a weighted combination of marks awarded for three test sessions:
- Written Response Test (WRT) — 40% of total marks,
- Practical and Mapping Exercise (PME) — 40% of total marks,
- Multimedia Test (MMT) — 20% of total marks.
Up to ½ of the participants are awarded medals and diplomas according to the results. Based on their performance, participants may receive gold, silver or bronze medals.
Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are distributed according to an approximate ratio of 1:2:3.
The results of the Olympiad are undeniable.
RegistrationRegistration is carried out by team leaders on behalf of national teams.
